ABOUT US
|
White Rock is one of the Lower Mainland's best locations for flatland skimboarding with eight kilometres of sandy beach and warm shallow waters. The progression of the sport in the area has been drastic from simple crusier runs to today's skateboard/snowboard influenced tricks such as Ollies and butters. The Breakneck Crew is proud to have been part of this revolution in White Rock from the beginning. Since 1997, Kyle Lynch has been doing his thing at East Beach experiencing the change from constructing driftwood rails to complex PVC rails, from wood bases with resin to all types of stronger more slick materials.
" Over the past ten years, It has been amazing watching how far the sport has come. I never imagined that the sport would become so popular. I remember when I first began skimming, I was one of the only a few skimboarders on the beach and now I have a full crew of guys just as stoked as I am. "

KYLE'S ISLAND TRIP 2007
|
Kyle learned to skim along time ago at Hornby Island and has made a patronage there every summer since. This year Kyle along with his sister (Rachel) and his wife (Dani), took off to Vancouver island to soak in some sun, relax and of course for Kyle skim until he could no longer stand. The first day began with a bit of a hitch, when the small crew of travellers reached the ferry terminal they were informed that there was a three sailing wait to go to nanaimo (that is basically like a 6 hour wait or so) and as you would expect they were bummed. So they ended up avoiding that problem completely by going over on the Victoria ferry even if it added a bit more driving to a long trek. Being an avid skimboarder Kyle was prepared to drive and as long as far as need be to get to a beach where there was skim. So he took the wheel and pressed the gas, and headed north along the highway.

After a couple of hours kyle was itching to at least get a couple throws in at a beach before the tide was completely in so he took the parksville exit. This took the crew onto the old island highway, which basically follows the coast which was like torture for Kyle who was witnessing the tide creeping in, as the group arrived at Qualicum Bay Kyle had had enough and pulled over grabbed his board out the the trunk and headed out for some skim. It was beautiful out and the skim was epic, " Qualicum is often over looked by visitors looking for skim because the beach doesn't have that many tidal pools, but I really enjoy it because it has less people on it and the people are always really stoked on skimboarding". The session only lasted about 40 minutes but gave Kyle the fix he was looking for and soon they were off heading towards Comox to spend the night in one Kyle's favorite campsites.

A couple years before Kyle had found this gem of a campsite just outside of comox which he had planned to use as a jumping of point for a session at Saratoga Beach the following day. The crew quickly set up their tent and went into comox to hangout, and waste away the rest of the day, including making a shelter at seal bay, walking around Comox's Harbour and of course getting some grub to cook on the camp fire.

With the arrival of the next day we all jumped in the car to head to Saratoga Beach, a forty minute drive north from our campsite. "Saratoga is one of the sickest flatland beaches on Vancouver Island it has beautifully white sand and has a great vibe being located away from any major city." Kyle spent three straight hours just freestyle skimming and eventually got bored and roled out a log from the shore to jib on. It was a great day of hanging at the beach, with scorching temperatures and an epic lowtide. We spent most of the day at the beach, and headed back to our campsite to chill out the rest of the night with a swim at the nearby rock beach and some good eats.

They all woke up the next day incredibly excited because it was time to head over to Hornby Island their final desination and well yes they had saved the best for last. "I was pretty stoked to hit Hornby Island, even if the weather was now becoming less idle that wasn't going to stop us from having a great time". After a quick twenty minutes drive south, to Buckley Bay the crew was now on route to Hornby Island. Those who haven't been to Hornby Island, the trip from Buckley Bay to Hornby involves a short ferry ride to Deman Island and then another short ferry to Hornby. Usually this only takes about an hour but the group all decided to explore Denman Island for a hour or two before crossing over to Hornby.

They arrived at Hornby Island around 11 am, went straight to the campsite set up there tent and then made the walk down to Tribune Bay. Kyle skimmed for about three hours and the beach was packed with tourist many of which were curious about what Kyle was doing and came over to take a closer look. Kyle was exhausted and everybody decided to go check out Hornby's famous Hippie center the ringside market. Rachel and Kyle found a pretty cool character selling some hippie attire and ended up buying a few things. The rest of the day was spent at Fords cove hanging out on the heron rocks and swimming under the summers sun. That night the three travellers decided to go to a movie at Hornby's movie theatre. "Anyone who hasn't watched a movie at Hornby wouldn't understand but it is one of the most fun things you can do on the island, the whole community gets involved. It is not rare for film to be spliced wrong or for film to be displayed upside down but I wouldn't have it any other way."

The mourning arrived bringing some rough weather, along with Kyle's birthday. Rachel and Kyle woke up early and took a walk down at Tribune Bay, watching the some rise. They were kind of annoyed by the fact that bonfires from the night before had been left burning and those who were drinking had left cans, bottles, and garbage all over the place. They spent some time dosing the fires, and helping some locals pick up some of the garbage from the beach. Everbody decided that a good breakfast was in order for our final day at Hornby, so it was chosen to take place at Jan's Cafe (a small but great cafe located in the ringside market). Kyle let everybody now that he wanted to skim at his old stomping grounds Whaling Station Bay and everybody agreed.

A great session was had in between rain showers and the group decided to celebrate the fact that they were in Hornby by hitting up the Cardboard house and their organic pizza. " We spent the rest of our last day hitting some of our favorite spots on the island including the cliffs of Helliwell Park and a Sunset at our secret beach". The next mourning they packed up their stuff and started the long trek back to White Rock and were already planning there next trip to Hornby Island.
